Hebburn School
Earlier this year groups of pupils were given the task of making models of an area of their school which they felt needed to be redesigned. They were supported in this work by Fiona Grey, an artist, and Paul Wellwood, one of the BSF project managers. Before they began their models they were shown examples of architecture considered good or interesting and a case study from the Sorrell Foundation project ‘Joined up Design for Schools’. Like the work done with our school the aim of the session was to show how pupils could work with designers to solve problems in their own schools.

Some of the pupils concentrated on a café/chill out area featuring a multi-coloured central spiral staircase. The area incorporates an outdoor pool, outdoor amphitheatre with individual pod seating areas and a roof terrace.

These pupils concentrated on a classroom/library called the Dome for obvious reasons. The walls of the area are constructed from glass. Chill out seating is situated on the mezzanine floors. There is a bank of computers along one wall of the raised level. Staircases seemed to feature large in the designs of the Hebburn pupils and this model has a unique staircase and central water feature.

Some pupils looked at remodelling their sports hall to include a graffiti wall, two long crossed lighting strips and a boxing ring!
