What's Happening with Building Schools for the Future?

South Tyneside and Gateshead Building Schools for the Future achieves financial close

South Tyneside and Gateshead Councils have passed the final milestone in their plans to build new secondary schools in South Tyneside and Gateshead under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme by the signing of contracts and reaching financial Close with inspiredspaces.

Financial Close has been reached on the multi million pound programme that will transform a large number of secondary schools across South Tyneside and Gateshead (STaG) in the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme confirming that the legal contracts have been completed and signed. This follows months of negotiations after the company was unveiled as the Councils' preferred bidder.

Inspiredspaces are formed by support services and construction company Carillion and its joint venture partners, The Local Education Partnership (LEP). The organisation includes c2a Limited (education), Ryder Architects, Colour UDL (landscape architects), Carillion Building, Cundalls (engineers), Morse (ICT), Fsquared (funding and regeneration) and many others.

The redevelopment of Jarrow School and Mortimer Community College are the first schools to be developed under the BSF Project and works are starting on site in February 2008. Design work for the next two schools in the project, St Josephs RC VA School and St Wilfrid's RC College in South Tyneside is also well underway, with the submission of Planning Applications expected in April 2008 and works starting in the summer of 2008. Discussions are also progressing with schools across the estate in connection with the delivery of ICT.

Initial visioning works with the second phase of schools including South Shields Community College, Thomas Hepburn, Heworth Grange and Harton Technology College will start in March 2008 with detailed design works being progressed from September 2008.

Work has already started with Harton Technology College where inspiredspaces have helped the school develop proposals and submit a bid to the Learning Skills Council to develop a Post 16 Vocational Centre on the school site.

The new developments at Jarrow and Mortimer have been designed following consultation with pupils, governors, teachers and the wider community. The state-of-the-art facilities are imaginative with flexible spaces to encourage teaching and learning.
